The project addressed the issues related to the spread of the dreaded HIV and AIDS in the target
areas of ten Gram Panchayats and 32 villages of Khanapur taluka in Belgaum District. It significantly
addressed the main reasons such as inadequate awareness about transmission of HIV/AIDS
among the rural youth, women and rural community, vertical transmission and safe motherhood in
the Community and their families, the social stigma attached to HIV/AIDS leading to fear and less
access to the services and treatment, inadequate health facilities and infrastructure to deal with
necessary procedures and tackling diseases effectively, poverty of reproductive group and PLHIV
that denies them access to preventive measures and the facilities, lack of care and support
systems and provision of essential support and consolation to the Women, Youth, Children, PLHIV
and their families.
326 People living with HIV/AIDS including youth, children, pregnant mothers and affected family
members experienced community and home-based support in the target villages. Nearly 20,000
community members are aware of the causes of the disease and the socio-economical,
psychological issues affiliated to the isolation of the target group.
